Why you should not restart a stalled car in water
If water enters the air intake, the engine can suck it into the cylinders. Water cannot be compressed, so cranking the engine can bend internal parts. This is called hydrolock, and the repair can be very expensive.
What to do right away
- Switch off the ignition and do not try to start it again
- Turn on hazard lights
- If the water is rising, leave the car and move to higher ground
- Take photos of the water level for your records
- Call a flatbed tow truck
Avoid the problem in the first place
- Do not drive into water if you cannot see the road surface
- If the water is up to the wheel hubs or higher, turn back
- Do not drive fast through water because it creates a wave towards the air intake
Tell your insurer
Engine damage from water is often handled differently from other claims. Check whether your policy includes an engine protection add-on, and call your insurer before repairs begin.
