Not every tow truck is the same. The two most common types are flatbed and wheel-lift trucks, and choosing the wrong one can cost you in repairs. Here is how they differ.
What is flatbed towing?
A flatbed truck has a hydraulic bed that tilts and slides. Your vehicle is driven or winched on and carried with all four wheels off the road. This is the gentlest way to move a vehicle.
What is wheel-lift towing?
A wheel-lift truck raises either the front or rear wheels while the other pair rolls on the road. It is quick and economical, and works well in tight spaces.

When you should insist on a flatbed
- All-wheel-drive and 4×4 vehicles
- Luxury and low-clearance cars
- Automatic transmission cars with a gearbox problem
- Accident-damaged vehicles with bent wheels or suspension
- Hybrid and electric vehicles. Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s towing advice.
When a wheel-lift is fine
For a short city tow of a manual car with no drivetrain or wheel damage, a wheel-lift tow is usually acceptable.
